Professor Dr. C. K. Atal, an internationally based and reputed research scientist, is renowned all over for his outstanding original contributions and pioneering work in a wide field of plant and medicinal plant based disciplines. He has achieved the feat of being one of the uncommon but truly multidisciplinary research scientists whose contributions have had major global impact in a wide variety of fields.
Prof. Dr. C. K. Atal has been a pioneer in Pharmacognosy in India, who “revolutionized Pharmacognosy as a subject, as a teacher, researcher and scientist,” in the words of Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India at their award citation. He is one of the first Pharmacognosists of India..
The multidisciplinary range and vast depth of his work can be seen in more than 550-600 scientific research publications in national and international journals, an uncommon occurrence. He is an award winning scientist, researcher, discoverer, teacher, author, writer, administrator, historian, artist, art patron, connoisseur, critic, and collector all combined in one.
As the director, he transformed RRL, Jammu into a modern internationally recognized multidisciplinary research Laboratory which produced several award winning works and discoveries in a wide base of sciences. By the time he left the laboratory as a UN consultant, he had so well organized the research machinery with technology and talent that it still continues to flourish on the projects started by Dr. Atal. During his tenure the laboratory acquired the topmost slot among the forty laboratories of CSIR in India, and also found itself elevated on the international maps where significant work has been done.
1. PROFESSOR BISHAMBAR DAS MEMORIAL AWARD, 1946, Government College Lahore, for best plant collection.
2. TATA ENDOWMENT FELLOWSHIP AWARD, 1954 for higher studies in USA.

BEST PAPER AWARD -1976 of E.O.A.I-awarded to Sobti, S.N, Pushpangadan, P, and Atal, C.K.-Genus Ocimum-potential source of new essential oils, presented at the seminar on recent developments in the field of essential oils with special reference to Agricultural, chemical, technological, economic and import/export aspects of essential oils organized by Essential Oil Association of India (E.O.A.I) on March 20-21,1976.
4. DHINGRA MEMORIAL MEDAL,1979 ( Essential Oil Association of India)-awarded to Sethi, V.K, Dhar, K.L., Atal, C.K., and Thappa, R.K. for the best adjudged paper -A search for new aroma chemicals, structural modifications of Citrionellal., Indian perfumer, 23(1),1979, 8-13.
5. ANDHRA SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION AWARD , Hyderabad,1982 -Import substitution award to RRL, Jammu- second prize was awarded to RRL, Jammu at the import substitution competition held at the 42nd All India Industrial Exhibition, January 1982, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, for the development of process for production of Gibberellic acid by submerged fermentation, a project initiated in June 1975.This was developed and valued at about one third the cost as compared to market value of imported chemical. This resulted in significant gains in terms of savings in import and increase in yield of agricultural produce. Earlier RRL, Jammu had developed a significant process for the production of Citric acid by submerged fermentation, and released to M/s ANDHRA Citrate Ltd, Hyderabad. Submerged culture technology was introduced for the first time in India by Dr.Atal.
6. FICCI AWARD, 1980 awarded to RRL, Jammu-(Federation of Indian Chamber Of Commerce & Industries award). Presented to Dr. Atal’s team for distinguished achievements in the field of rural development-institutional initiative in rural development. Award was handed out by the Honorable President of India Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy at a formal function held on April 25,1981.The citation of the award read as follows - “RRL Jammu has made significant contributions to the economic and social development of the region, introduction of new varieties of fish and fishery technology, new crops, improved storage facilities for grains, solar dryer for fruits and vegetables, utilization of forest and agricultural waste and setting up local resource based rural industries is pioneering. To improve rural health, the laboratory has developed formulation for the control of health, and body lice and studied the worm diseases. Its efforts at supplementing rural incomes merit recognition.”
7. AWARD TO RRL, Jammu for import substitution in hops leading to great savings in foreign exchange.All pioneering work on hops was done by Dr. Atal’s team at RRL as a result of which Hops was successfully introduced for the first time in India.
8. PROFESSOR G.P.SRIVASTAVA MEMORIAL AWARD, 1980 - GIVEN BY APTI, (Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India). Convocation (annual Pharmaceutical congress, Jan 23 -25, 1981) held on 25th January, 1981 at Nagpur - Dr Atal has been the first recipient of the award. The citation is reproduced as follows- “honored in recognition of distinguished contributions in the field of Pharmaceutical profession, in revolutionizing the concept of Pharmacognosy as a subject, giving fruitful new direction to its teaching and research in India, contributions as a teacher, researcher and as director of RRL have been notably worthy to the profession and have highlighted the all round shining facets of his personality. The additions to the scientific literature and drug and process developments speak voluminously in innumerable but important papers, advising and coordinating capacities to the profession shall ever be remembered.”
9. PIPERINE, AS A BIOENHANCER- AN AWARD WINNING REVOLUTIONARY BREAKTHROUGH (1979) –This is a discovery of the first ever reported plant based drug bioavailability enhancers .Later the research received the prestigious CSIR NATIONAL TECHNOLOGYAWARD(in the year 1993, to Dr.Usha Zutshi and Dr.K.L.Bedi,students of Dr.Atal), on the work done under Dr. Atal and given to the RRL Jammu team after Dr. Atal joined United Nations. DR. I. C. CHOPRA award, 2000 was also given to Dr. Atal (one of the reasons for the award) for this discovery which is first credited to Dr. C. K. 10. HONORARY PROFESSORSHIP awarded in 1980 by the Dept of Chemistry, Jammu University.
11. ESSENTIAL OIL ASSOCIATION OF INDIA SILVER JUBILEE AWARD, SILVER JUBILEE PLAQUE 1982 for outstanding services to the association/services rendered as its President for two terms, i.e. 1976 & 1977 & 1978.The foundation stone of the association at Darya Ganj, Delhi was also laid by Dr. Atal.
12. FELLOW COMFORPTS AWARD 1995, the prestigious award was given at Dehra Dun (Minor forests products).
13. DR. I. C. CHOPRA AWARD ,2000,The very first Dr. I.C.Chopra award ,year 2000,for the path breaking work on Piperine, Plant based immunomodulators, Vasicine, Natural plant based anti-inflammatory Boswellic acid, a non steroidal drug and Hepatoprotective agents/formulations.
14. PROFESSOR PRAN NATH MEHRA MEMORIAL AWARD, 2001, given for outstanding research in plant sciences (the renowned Prof. P. N. Mehra was also the teacher of Dr. Atal, and a distinguished Botanist at Punjab University, Chandigarh).

AWARD OF INTERNATIONAL JOINT PATENT / ROYALTY (1991) worth about US $ 18000 approx. on a joint Indo Polish research, (Gustowski and his team), for Debilysin- a urolithiolytic drug (renal calculi dissolving drugs), successfully marketed in Byelorussia and Ukraine. 20. Best paper of the year award – paper written by Dr. Bhatia & Dr. Atal on fermentation was awarded the best paper of the year award by the journal of food technology,when a high alcohol yielding fungal strain was developed.

ROBE OF HONOUR, 2007, APTI (Shawl and plaque presented on 25th October 2007) – for contributions to science and teaching at the 12th Annual National Convention (25-27th Oct, 2007) of Association of Pharmaceutical teachers of India (APTI) and co hosted by University Institute of Pharmaceutical sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, while celebrating the Diamond jubilee year of the University.
1. DISCOVERY OF BIOENHANCER PIPERINE: The award winning breakthrough of the first ever reported case in the world of plant based “Bioavailability enhancer” having a tremendous cost benefit advantage with added bonus of a greatly reduced incidence of adverse effects of drugs and also an increase in the activity of the drug. The research won the prestigious CSIR National Technology award (RRL, Jammu team, after Dr. Atal left RRL) and also the Dr. I. C. Chopra award, 2000 (one of the reasons of the award) given to Dr. C. K. Atal after his return to India. The very first concept and research paper on Piperine as a bioenhancer is credited to Dr. Atal (Atal C.K., I.D.M.A. Bull, 1979, 10, 36) titled “A breakthrough in Drug Bioavailability” – A clue from age old wisdom of Ayurveda”, and soon accompanied by other papers in The International Journal of Ethnopharmacology. No such molecule has ever been thought of or found. This is a basic discovery, and has opened up entirely new chapters in Pharmaceutical research and received worldwide recognition with extensive successfully marketed formulations. Two initial references in international journals (given below) were followed by more published papers on Piperine from RRL and also all over the world.

3. VASICINE: Another molecule Vasicine from Adhatoda vasica discovered by Dr. Atal and his RRL Jammu team was established to have action in controlling capillary bleeding through action on Bone Marrow. It is a major breakthrough and attracted international interest especially in USA. An agreement was signed by Dr. Atal in USA with Farmacon dated 29th Oct, 1981 in USA, and agreed that the data be provided to Farmacon research Corporation,39,South Lasalle street , Chicago Illinois, USA for a sum of US dollars 80,000/- plus additional negotiable royalty ,subject to CSIR Head office approval and retaining justified rights by CSIR. This was meant to be researched further in USA for possible marketing in USA as per agreement with Alan J, Schroeder, Vice President of the company. However the decision for approval was unduly delayed by head office and the advance cheque had to be returned leading to bad mood in international circles about Indian system. This was the highest ever recorded amount of that time offered to any of the CSIR laboratories from international companies and original signed documents of agreement are still in possession of Dr. Atal.
4. RLX-a significant work on bronchodilatory effects of Deoxy vasicinone.This molecule is a wonderful anti inflammatory bronchodilator with minimal side effects as compared to conventional existing drugs and havng a novel mechanism of action entirely different from rest. Moreover other anti asthmatic drugs have either anti-inflammatory or else brochhodlatory effects only.

6. POTASSIUM EMBELLATE- a centrally acting, non narcotic orally effective analgesic, the only molecule of its kind known to exist. This is a new molecule acting on so far unknown and undiscovered receptors in the brain.

FIRST EVER REPORT on the occurrence of cytoplasmic genes (not chromosomal) in Plantago ovata (Psyllium), these factors being found in the cytoplasm (maternal inheritance).These contributed to the propagation of species to produce only female offsprings even though the plant showed male sterility. These were earlier known as cytoplasmic factors and were reported only in tomatoes and Zea maize. 11. INTERNATIONAL AUTHORITY ON CROTALARIA TOXICITY-(a) Solving the outbreak of mysterious Phoolan bimari disease (Sarguja district in Madhya Pradesh) on which many teams were sent to investigate including one from the All India Institute of Medical sciences, New Delhi. It was being attributed to some new disease of infectious cause and had baffled the research teams. This was solved by RRL Jammu team when the cause was found to be crotalaria seeds as food adulterant. (b) Many serial research publications on Crotalaria were subsequently published. (c) PAHO (USA) under WHO appointed Dr. Atal as consultant after a worldwide computer search for authorities on Crotalaria. Dr. Atal then conducted several lecture tours all over USA (wherever Toxicology work was going on) for toxic plant residues and adulteration in foods and cereals, isolation detection of hepatotoxins in food chain, especially Crotalaria toxin which had also caused morbidity / mortality in USA.
12. FIRST EVER REPORT in the world of establishing Borax extraction plant at the highest altitude of 14,500 feet by use of geothermal energy from natural geysers in Pugga valley of Ladakh (Chumathang hot springs). It was also the highest commercial factory setup in the world, and was covered by the BBC news.
13. LEADER IN BIOTECHNOLOGY-RRL achieved the status of a becoming a major contributor to biotechnology research in India and at international level.
14. The first ever Indian Ethnopharmacology research team was launched in India at RRL, Jammu in 1985. The aim was to blend the strengths of traditional herbal Indian systems with modern tools of science and technology, scientifically upgade/update and validate the herbal systems.
15. SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO RURAL RESEARCH- which won the FICCI AWARD, 1980 for outstanding contributions to rural development. Numerous wide based projects like Fisheries, Leather , Fur , Tanning, Chihuahua rabbit farming, Fast growing tree species, Cash crops, rabbit wool, Willow, paper pulp technology, large scale plantation of fast growing trees, Hops (a major breakthrough and award winning work) Sericulture, Mushroom, solar drying technology, agrotechnology, food technology, J&K Mountain Cheese (maash kalari), termite control (including eradicating superstition-oham shikni in some areas of J&K), tea(successfully rescuing the tea industry from international competition as a prominent member of Sadasivan committee). In Sikkim, Dr. Atal was invited by the Sikkim State and its Hon. Governor Shri Talae Yar Khan as a consultant to identify the raw materials which could be isolated from the forest with industrial potential. A report was handed over to the Sikkim Government. In J&K,apple pomace was discarded or dumped in the river Jhelum as a waste which contributed to the environmental pollution. Dr. Atal and his team in collaboration with the Army Horse and mule division designed and set up 20 foot tall silos for fermenting the Pomace to produce nitrogen rich feed for the Army mules. In the field of Essential oils & aroma chemicals, RRL achieved the distinction of being the premier institution in the country to develop technology for its cultivation, distillation of oil, extract of menthol, and making bolder crystal of menthol .The process for conversion of mark into boards was developed. As result of the efforts by RRL, Japanese mint is since then successfully grown in India and this industry grew to become a Rs 100 million industry by the beginning of 1980’s. It has jumped by leaps and bound since then. The country’s entire demand of menthol and mint oil is now met from Indian sources which was introduced by RRL. Use of coppicing method to tremendously increase the yield of oil in Eucalyptus tree, Eucalyptus citriodora, grasses like lemon grass, Citrionella, Jamrosa ( Jammu equivalent of Palmrosa reputed for its rosaceous odour) Oscimum basilicum, RRL developed Clocimum(clove scented Oscimum :TULSI) and identified eugenol as it’s major constituents. Plant breeding activities of RRL led to the development of many more varieties of Oscimum and Cymbopogan which yield essential oils having different constituents. New method of vegetative propagation of Ocimum was developed for the first time (vegetative cuttings were successfully grown using the month of February and under certain controlled environment). Biotechnology received a great thrust and significant work was done. Vanillin is of interest to the flavor industry. RRL developed the technology to manufacture vanillin from sawdust, a waste product of joinery mills, using submerged fermation technology (this technology had been earlier introduced for the first time in India by Dr. Atal, and which had also won the Andhra Science and Technology award. Fibre board factories were established in Himachal from pine needles which also were used to yield turpentine. There are many other projects, which can be easily added to the list. Without a multidisciplinary approach and knowledge this wide variety of work is not possible. The Chatha farm in Jammu was also utilized for this research.
16. ESTABLISHING INDUSTRIES GLOBALLY-Numerous pilot plant scale and commercial factory scale industries were established all over India based on the technologies developed by RRL Jammu. Industries were also established internationally in his capacity as Director of RRL, Jammu. Later numerous successful industries were established internationally under him as consultant to United Nations projects, whose budgets were worth several millions of US dollars.
1. ANNUAL CONFERENCE INDIAN SOCIETY OF HEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION: Inaugurated the event on Nov 6, 1982 at Govt. Medical College, Jammu.
2. FOUNDED AND HEADED THE HIMACHAL BRANCH OF RRL- it is now an independent government organization.
3. ANNUAL CONVOCATION, PUNJAB ENGINEERING COLLEGE: Chief Guest on the occasion on 28th March 1982.
4. FOUNDATION STONE (BUILDING OF THE “ESSENTIAL OIL ASSOCIATION OF INDIA)”- laid the foundations of the building at Darya Ganj, Delhi.
5. GIRLS HOSTEL FOR WORKING WOMEN: - inaugurated the hostel at RRL Jammu in October, 2000.
6. CHIEF GUEST” OF THE ALUMNI MEET: -Dr. Atal was invited as the chief guest on the occasion of Diamond Jubilee celebration 2005 of the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Punjab University, Chandigarh. A conference was also held on the occasion, international symposium on India emerging as a global Pharmaceutical competitor on 25/26 Feb 2005. Dr. Atal also chaired the lecture “Herbal Drugs – Challenges and opportunities for India in Global Competition”. He was also invited as guest of Punjab University on the diamond jubilee celebrations on 1st & 2nd Oct, 2007.
7. HONOURED AT CONFERENCE ORGAINSED BY APTI AT PUNJAB UNIVERSITY, CHANDIGAH, on 25th October 2007, the event being held as part of the ongoing diamond jubilee celebrations, co organized/hosted by the Department of Pharmaceutical sciences of the same university.
8. CHIEF GUEST OF THE ANNUAL SCIENCE EXHIBITION –the exhibition was inaugurated at Kendrya Vidalaya School, Jammu, on 25th November, 1983.
9. FOUNDER OF THE GALLERY OF FINE ARTS at 1000A, sector C, Sushant Lok-I, Gurgaon, Haryana, India,a non commercial project, and also established the Vietnam school of Indian miniature paintings. The various collections are displayed at the site.

TECHNICAL RESOURCE PERSON IN THE SADASIVAN COMMITTEE (1976), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India as a Technologist to prepare report and give recommendations for improving tea production cost effectively in the face of rising global competition (especially from countries like Kenya, Sri Lanka & Indonesia).Implemented recommendations had a very good boosting effect on the sagging tea industry.

8. UNIDO/UNDP (Vietnam) -five projects funded by United Nations and Vietnam government (1985- 1992) costing about 11-13 million US dollars were set up in Vietnam by Dr. C. K. Atal. This led to the establishment of several industries. The very first year of production of Eucalyptus oil saw the sales cross the million dollar mark (US $) in the international market due to its strict quality control.Several such projects were implemented and commissioned under Dr.Atal as a part of United Nations mission to fund and develop Vietnam.

10. VIETNAM GOVERNMENT (1985-1992) Institute of Materia Medica (Hanoi) - headed by Madam Knu was upgraded with latest technology. Dr. Atal established the scientific infrastructure with latest technology in Vietnam (both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh). He developed large cultivation farms and factories for medicinal and aromatic plants at Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), like berberine (from Berberis), curcumin (from rhizomes of Curcuma longa spice commonly called haldi) and many other projects for Vietnam government.
11. BURMESE GOVERNMENT- (Rangoon), 1981 (presently Myanmar): To set up Menthol distillation plant and transfer of technology for production of bold crystals of Menthol from Mentha arvensis. Under the guidance of Dr. Atal a pilot plant was setup .A demonstration unit and training technique was also given to Burmese scientists for the same.
12. BANGLADESH GOVERNMENT (1984)- for helping Bangladesh CSIR for technology demonstration to upgrade/modernize their Pharmaceutical formulations like Chavanprash.
13. UNIVERSITY OF MUNCHEN IN GERMANY- (nuclear research institute) invited Dr. Atal as a solar energy consultant.
14. INSTITUTE OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, POLAND- headed by the Polish Director, Dr Kocor(pronounced as kochur) invited Dr. Atal for lecture tours and technology demonstration in various institutes of Poland.
15. RUSSIA AND TASHKENT, 1981- Soviet academy of sciences: invited Dr. Atal for lecture and technology demonstration.
16. SUMMER FELLOWSHIP (1955-57) OF ELI LILLY USA- on selection/development of high yield strains of Clavicaps purpurea and submerged culture of Clavicaps purpurea.
CHAIRMAN & ASSOC. PROF, DEPARTMENT OF BIOSCIENCES AT THE JESUIT CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY, OMAHA, NEBRASKA, USA, 1957, on the recommendation of Dr. Schwarting, Dean Garret of Creighton University engaged the services of Dr. Atal as the head of department of analytical chemistry (Assoc. Professor Grade). Dr. Atal also imparted teaching courses in various fields. He was researching with Pharmacognosy, natural product chemistry Pharmacology, Analytical chemistry, and potentiometeric titrations and standardizations.
LONGEST SERVING DIRECTOR OF CSIR AT REGIONAL RESEARCH LABORATORY , JAMMU, KASHMIR BRANCH AND HIMACHAL PRADESH BRANCH (1971- 1987) (ADDITIONAL SECRETARY GRADE) Under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. The Himachal Pradesh branch is currently an independent body.
Dr. Atal formed a team of multidisciplinary task force that produced several significant and major breakthroughs in research. A large number of departments were created to pave way for multidisciplinary research, while old departments were revamped and modernized. Time bound programmes, well defined targets, induction of young talent and modern technology was employed creating a new drug development programme that started yielding goal oriented results. Major significant leads and path breaking results were obtained in drug development. He was the senior most in CSIR and due for the highest post of Director General of CSIR, when he was selected for the international based prestigious post as consultant by United Nations at Vienna, Austria for implementing UNDP projects in South East Asia. He continued to hold the post of Director while on deputation to United Nations till 1987, after which he prematurely retired from CSIR and retained the United Nations consultancy for a continuous period of about seven years. Many talented students who had joined Dr. Atal at RRL, Jammu continued the research projects started by Dr. Atal after he joined United Nations. He was made an Honorary Professor in Organic Chemistry, by the Dept of Chemistry, at Jammu University in 1980.
Dr. Atal was appointed to the prestigious post of Chief Technical Advisor to United Nations in 1985 (on deputation from CSIR from which he took voluntary retirement in 1987). He was posted in South East Asia, based in Vietnam and implemented successfully a record five United Nations projects simultaneously in Vietnam. These five projects were commissioned under the supervision of Dr. Atal at a cost of roughly about 13 million US dollars from 1985 to 1992 in addition to the funds provided by the Vietnam Government. More projects were being given to him but he decided to return to India.

Dr. Atal has been listed as a Chemical Technologist in the Roster of United Nations. Dr. Atal served as a consultant with United Nations for a total of about 8 to 9 years including the seven years in Vietnam projects. He was given a free hand for purchases up to US dollars 50,000/- in cash in each transaction for the projects at Vietnam, which were implemented on time and within the budget, all aggregating to about 13 million US dollars. In the very first year of its production, the sales of Eucalyptus oil crossed the million dollar mark in international market due to its strict quality control. It is generally the policy not to hand over the charge of so many projects to a single individual due to the risks involved in terms of great loss of funds, if the project fails. However the head office, Vienna, after deliberations with UN resident representative of Vietnam Mr. Smith (and also prompting from the Vietnam government) consented to the appointment of Dr. Atal after going through his credentials. Some examples of other work done in these projects are Bixa orellana (butter yellow) Berberine factories, turmeric factory, etc.
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES-Under Dr. Atal, many scientific exchange programmes were organised between Vietnam, United Nations, India and other countries. Similarly these were also carried out in his capacity as director of RRL at Jammu.

Dr. Atal has written many books, some of them world reference books and also officially recommended/used in all the Pharmacy colleges of India. His two volumes book consisting of about 1000 pages on cultivation and utilization of medicinal plants, and a second part on cultivation and utilization of aromatic plants is used officially in curriculum for higher studies in all the Pharmacy colleges of India and is in demand all over the world. His contribution in FAO book on non wood forests products is also available on the internet as a part of a United Nations compilation. He is also the author of an unpublished but completed book of more than 100 pages on Non wood forest products. Yet another book of about 400-500 pages is under process on the same subject. He has also written about 5 or 6 volumes of unpublished book on the Indian history while one history book of about 200 pages is ready for publication containing rare unpublished and original researched work.

Dr. Atal was born in a Kashmiri Pandit family, whose ancestors were prominent courtiers in the courts of Lahore, Kashmir and Jaipur. Some of the ancestors included prominent courtiers of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, like Raja Dina Nath Madan, Dewan Ganga Ram Raina, Dewan Lacchman Prasad Thulal (Atal) and his younger brother Dewan Ajudhya Prasad Raina (great grandson of Dewan Anand Kumar, former V.C. Punjab University, Chandigarh). The family had left Kashmir around or sometime after 1750 from the Rainawari locality of Srinagar. Some members migrated to Ranjit Singh’s Lahore court while later one branch shifted to Jaipur court of His Highness Sawai Ram Singh. Dr. Atal came across rare original family documents from that period. The researcher instinct took over and he developed it into a full time hobby and passion. Among one of his vast fields of interest and research, he has developed a very special interest in the Indian history during the period of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Born on 4th November, 1928 at Lahore, (now Pakistan) Dr. C. K. Atal was a brilliant student and a product of the reputed Government College, Lahore; (at that time renowned for education in Asia). He participated in the freedom movement and still bears on his upper lip the scar of a pellet shot fired by the British. At the time of the partition of India in 1947, Dr. C. K. Atal was still a teenager of 19 years age, and got uprooted from a secure life and sought refuge in Delhi and other parts of India. All the family possessions were left behind in Lahore and he had to start life from scratch. He worked and studied at the same time for survival and also contributed to his family expenses. He has been a self made man.
Dr. C. K. Atal was selected for the Pharmacy course at the Department of Pharmaceutical sciences, Chandigarh. He first did his B. Pharm 1949, (under Medical College Amritsar) and then M. Pharm (1953) under the able guidance of renowned Botanist, Prof P. N. Mehra along with teaching and research experience of 3 years.
He proceeded to USA in September, 1954, from where he completed his Ph.D. degree in Nov, 1957, in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry under the most eminent Pharmacognosist of USA, Prof. A. E. Schwarting. The adoption of the Schwarting approach world-wide has been one of the most prominent factors underpinning the growth and development of the ASP, and of Pharmacognosy as a science. Dr. Atal was awarded a Tata endowment fellowship (Tata Foundation) for his trip to USA and then a teaching assistantship at the University of Connecticut, USA. The award of Ph. D. to Dr. Atal was based on the thesis titled “Pharmacognostic and Phytochemical study of Withenia somnifera.” As a renowned teacher and guide, Prof. A. E. Schwarting imparted in Dr. Atal, a culture of multifaceted approach to studies and this practice ultimately helped Dr. Atal in his career. Under encouragement from his guide, he attended various courses in multiple fields of education and developed a multidisciplinary aspect. Dr. Atal was exposed to a variety of subjects such as plant physiology (under Prof. Wallace of Botany Department), Biosystematics and experimental taxonomy (under Prof. W. H. Camp also of Botany Department), Statistics, Genetics & Plant breeding under the famous Prof. Mehlquist of the Floriculture Department), identification of structures of new compounds from plant microbiology (under Prof. Spaeth of Organic Chemistry Department, plant tissue culture and submerged culture in fermenters. He also took courses in French and German language. Dr. Atal had 45 credit hours of course work which was more than the double required for fulfillment, acceptance of the thesis and award of Ph.D. degree. The thesis on the study of Withania somnifera was one of the earlier few significant research papers on Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha). Withania later came to be internationally highlighted for its medicinal properties. Still later on as further work was done, it came to be known as the “Ginseng of India”.
Dr. Atal was appointed as Chairman, Department of Biosciences at the Jesuit Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, USA in 1957, and also imparted teaching courses in various fields of Pharmacognosy and Pharmacy. Dr. Atal was one of the scientists who went against the usual trend of brain drain and returned to his own country after a stay of more than five years and having obtained a green card resident status of USA. He was the Chairman, International affairs at the University of Connecticut; USA. He was in charge of the herbarium at the department of Pharmaceutical sciences as a part time job. Dr. Atal has a working knowledge of French, German, Urdu, Punjabi, and Hindi (besides English).
Armed with the latest technology and broad based knowledge gained in USA, Dr. Atal returned to India in 1959 and was appointed as the head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at Punjab University, Chandigarh. He was involved in teaching students in the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and under him the students came across the latest techniques and instrumental methods of research which he had himself acquired in USA. Dr. Atal introduced many latest methods of research in India for the first time. He was popular with the students for his teaching methods and wide based knowledge. He produced many research papers during this time. Dr. Atal obtained research grants/ funds from Eli Lily USA for ergot research, Meer Corporation also of USA for research on Isabgol,and from Nestle on Papain research . The world’s biggest herbal extraction company, S. B. Penick & co. (NEW YORK) granted research funds etc. He worked under the ICMR multidisciplinary research units, and also continued the process of publishing research papers in scientific journals, which grew enomorously in numbers with the passage of time.
In 1964 Dr. Atal became the youngest assistant director at Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu (RRL) under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Soon Dr. Atal was promoted as the Deputy Director, then acting Director and finally in 1971 became a full fledged Director.
In 1971 he successfully organized a fair for the benefit of war veterans and war widows and all the proceeds were contributed to the army. The event of war also saw RRL, Jammu contributing in the form of sending vehicles and evacuation teams to the borders for civilians at a great personal risk to their lives. Blood banks were organized for the war tragedies at Chamb Jorian frontier, as blood was urgently needed in large quantities to save lives of armed personnel and this was highly appreciated by the army in the form of a certificate given to RRL, Jammu.
LONGEST SERVING DIRECTOR OF REGIONAL RESEARCH LABORATORY AT JAMMU, KASHMIR BRANCH AND HIMACHAL PRADESH BRANCH (1971- 1987) (ADDITIONAL SECRETARY GRADE) in 1971 he became the Director, R.R.L. at Jammu, a position which he held as a record longest serving Director till 1987. Major significant leads and path breaking results were obtained in drug development and many fields of science. He was also made an Honorary Professor in Organic Chemistry, Dept of Chemistry, Jammu University (1980).

Dr. Atal has done original researched in the history of Punjab, especially Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s period, and delivered many Lectures at various places. At National Museum, Calcutta ,he lectured on Sikh art ,especially highlighting Master artist and portrait specialist Chajju Bhagat Raina(the grandson of the most refined and greatest artist of India, the legendary Nainsukh, whose work has been auctioned at international auction houses at record prices) and which was an eye opener as this was the first talk on a rare collection of about forty original unpublished masterpieces of the artist ,a lecture at Indira Gandhi Centre for Arts Delhi, on Indian Miniature Paintings and the different schools and styles, especially Kashmir style( Reference - Paintings under the Sikh rule, “Vihangama”-The IGNCA newsletter, Vol III, May –Jun 2002) http://ignca.nic.in/nl002103.htm. He is also the founder member of “Heritage Kashmir”, and the inaugural issue of Heritage Kashmir contains his article, “The Kashmiri pundits in the Court of Ranjit Singh” (Vimarsh, Vol I, No 1, Jul-Sep2005). His original article "the prominent Kashmiri pundits in the Sikh court”, was published in Roop Lekha in the year 1971. Dr. Atal has a deep knowledge on the coins of India of various periods. In a unique research study, the coins of different periods were subjected to mass spectrum analysis to find out the composition and quality of its alloy. Based on the study, he delivered a lecture on invitation by the renowned historian and personal friend, Dr. M. S. Randhawa, on the reasons for the frequent defeats of India by the invaders. This conclusion was based on the inferior metallurgical technology of India at a given period in history, as compared to other countries in a particular time frame of history. A country which had better metallurgical technology could make better coins and hence by inference also better weapons, like superior swords, guns , cannons and heavy artillery. This lecture highlighted a unique and overlooked way of demonstrating the specific technological difference between India and other countries. This approach was appreciated by historians as it was earlier not demonstrated in any study. Dr. Atal wrote an article called “the story of a rupee” published in the Newspaper “Tribune” .Dr. Atal is also the author of an Urdu compilation called “Jazeerae”- (islands of thoughts), with the foreword written by the renowned award winner artist and Dogri writer O.P.Sharma, “Saarthi” of J&K State. Dr. Atal has compiled an unpublished multi volume history of Ranjit Singh period and which contains an illustrated "Who is who" of the court of Ranjit Singh. All work on this topic is based on original research and material collected since 1960 onwards, from all over the world .It has many rare unpublished masterpieces by Chhajju, the portrait specialist of Ranjit Singh’s court. Dr. Atal has an eye for aesthetic and refined art which has helped him to acquire a significant and beautiful collection. Dr.Atal collected data and paintings of Master Sansar Chand, court artist of last ruler of Jammu Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh and renowned artist of the state.On 4th July2008,An exhibition and seminar on master Sansar Chand Sharma, was conducted and hosted by Indira Gandhi national centre for arts and Dr.Atal.

In a rare happening, Dr. Atal patronized and commissioned mainly in Hanoi and also Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city) some renowned and awarded Vietnam artists for painting miniature style of Indian art, and in a way established the Vietnam school of Indian miniature paintings between 1985 to 1992 (seven years).This school churned out about 300 or more miniature paintings of different Indian styles (some of them being of finest quality, such as Mughal, Rajasthani, Pahari, Basohli, and little known Kashmir style etc) approximately produced at the rate of one painting per week (seven years or about 360 weeks).
Examples include tours to five cities of Hungary and Warsaw, Poland, Polish academy of Organic Chemistry, Poland (headed by the Director Dr. Kocor, pronounced as kochur). Dr. Kocor invited Dr. Atal for lecture tours in various institutes of Poland. In 1992, he delivered a lecture on biologically active molecules in Department of Pharmaceutical sciences, Houston, Texas,USA. He delivered several lectures in Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh). Dr. Atal was accompanied by a delegation of senior officials of Vietnam Government such as Vice Minister, Ministry of Health, Vietnam on educational tours from Vietnam to India in 1991. In 1991, he was a resource speaker on the topic fractional distillation of essential oil along with Mr. Salvador Fanaga and Mrs. A. Punruckvong at the Second UNIDO workshop on essential oil industry at Manilla, Philippine held on 7th Feb 1991. He conducted several lectures in USA, Germany, UK, West Indies, USSR, Germany, and France. Lectures were conducted in West Indies on essential oil distillation technology and solar drying.

Dr. Arthur Ernest Schwarting, one of the founding members of the American Society of Pharmacognosy, passed away on October 22, 1996 in Longwood , Florida and his death will produce profound sadness for his many former students, scientific colleagues and friends in Pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical education. The first Ph.D. conferred by the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University was to Arthur Schwarting in 1943. His major was pharmacognosy and his major advisor was David hiner. More details of Arthur Schwarting's significant life accomplishments have been published by former Schwarting student, Tip Tyler in JNP 41:292 (1978) and JNP 55:833 (1992).
Born in Waubay , South Dakota on June 8, 1917 , Schwarting received the B. S. in Pharmacy from South Dakota State College in 1940, and the Ph.D. degree from the Ohio State University with a major in Pharmacognosy. In 1943, Art accepted a faculty position at the University of Nebraska where he remained until 1949 when he joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut , School of Pharmacy .
It was first at Nebraska and later to a much greater degree at the University of Connecticut that Schwarting served as major professor to graduate students who enthusiastically experienced his revolutionary teaching of the science of Pharmacognosy. Prior to Schwarting, Pharmacognosy teaching in the United States was organized largely from a botanical point of view including emphasis on taxonomic, morphologic and histologic aspects of natural drugs. Schwarting classified plant drugs on the basis of their active chemical constituents and included chemical, biochemical and biosynthetic considerations in defining modern Pharmacognosy. The adoption of the Schwarting approach world-wide has been one of the most prominent factors underpinning the growth and development of the ASP, and of Pharmacognosy as a science.
It was Arthur Schwarting who played the major role in the formation of the American Society of Pharmacognosy in 1959. In 1960, he became editor of Lloydia, a quarterly journal of pharmacognosy and allied biological sciences, which became officially affiliated with the ASP in 1961.The journal name was changed in 1970 to, The Journal of Natural Products as we know it today. Art Schwarting served as editor for JNP for seventeen years from 1960-1976. In 1970, professor Schwarting was appointed Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut , a post he held until 1980 when he retired. In 1971-1972, Dean Schwarting served as president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He was the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the American Pharmaceutical Association Foundation Research Achievement Award in 1964; the University of Connecticut Alumni Association Award for Faculty Excellence in 1965; and the Centennial Achievement Award from The Ohio State University in 1970. For his long and outstanding service to the ASP, Schwarting was named an Honorary Member of the Society in 1981.
Dr. Arthur E. Schwarting was an outstanding teacher at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His intellect, patience and sense of humor were powerful assets to a dedicated teacher-scientist-scholar who motivated and superbly served as major professor for graduate students over a period of three decades.
Arthur Schwarting is survived by his wife Roberta (Bobbie) and two sons Michael and Gary and several grandchildren.
